For hikers spending the night on Velika Planina
The day starts early here and we’ll get going right at 5 in the morning! 😊 First, you’ll get a few minutes to enjoy the sunrise, then it’s off to milk the cows and send them out to pasture. As you and a herdsman clean up the barn, it’s time for a herder’s lunch of local delicacies. Then comes a hike across the mountain and a bit of research into the area’s rich cultural heritage. You will get to visit the oldest herder’s hut – Preskar’s Museum Hut (slight surcharge), the Chapel of St. Mary of the Snows, which is the work of a student of Slovenia’s greatest architect, Jože Plečnik, as well as the Herders’ Settlement. You’ll quench your thirst with tea picked right from Velika Planina’s flowers, learning about the medicinal herbs and plants that grow there. After lunch you will have a deserved rest, and your day will end among the cows staring at a beautiful sunset.

Route description: Set off towards the Herders’ Settlement, where together with the herder we will goad the cows back to the barn and, after their evening milking, leave them to rest.

Since Velika Planina is a fickle mistress (with, among other things, quickly changing weather conditions and live animals), there could be some changes to the schedule. On the day of your trip, herdsman Žan will explain your itinerary in detail.
